My Background

I trained in psychotherapy after years of spiritual practice, including four years of intensive residential training at a Zen monastery in upstate New York. That experience taught me the value of silent reflection, and also its limits, which led me toward finding ways to actually talk through what I was working with internally.

Psychotherapy training gave me both an intensive experience of being a client myself,  and a way to be of genuine use to others. I’ve since worked across a wide range of settings, including eating disorder services, sexual health services, alcohol and drug services, working with activists and NGOs, and coordinating a dialectical behavior therapy program. Having worked in private practice for the last ten years I have experience in helping people with a wide range of challenges.

Psychotherapy, when done right, changes people’s lives. I do not take this responsibility lightly, and have done extensive post-qualifying advanced psychotherapy training to help me to do the best job with you that I can do.

How I Work

I usually start a first appointment by asking you “what are the problems that you’re having?” Sometimes this might be obvious to you, but often we’ll take a bit of time to clarify this together. Clarifying the problem helps to ensure that we’re working together on what’s most important to you. By the end of the first appointment hopefully you’ll have a sense for yourself if the way that we’re working together feels helpful. If not, we can adjust how we’re approaching things, or we could have a discussion about whether a different therapist might work better for you.

After qualifying, most mental health professionals do not video record their sessions with clients, despite strong evidence that this improves outcomes. I confidentially video record all appointment to allow me to review and pick up on extra details to make the work as effective as possible for my clients. Recordings are deleted whenever you decide to finish treatment.

Affective Set-Point Therapy

My main way of doing therapy is called Affective Set-Point Therapy. This approach utilises cutting-edge neuroscience to help us to understand and change automatic patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that are causing the problems that bring you to therapy. This approach also draws on attachment theory, which helps us to make sense of how earlier relationships in our life and past adaptive coping strategies can help us to understand the difficuties you’re having in your life now.

I’m currently accepting new clients.
